Unlike North American universities, Australian universities offer many professional qualification programs at the undergraduate level. This means that students straight from high school can enrol in programs to be become doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, etc. So don’t be surprised if your professional program of interest is offered via a bachelor’s degree at Australian universities!
In Canada, most professions require that graduates obtain licensure from a provincial regulatory body before they can work; professional requirements can vary greatly by province.
Postgraduate degrees at universities in both Australia and Canada are for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree and want to further their studies.
Types of Postgraduate Degrees: Coursework and Research Postgraduate programs may comprise coursework, research, or a combination of both.
Postgraduate coursework degrees are subject-based programs at the higher degree level and are generally applied in nature. These programs are suited for students who want to acquire specialist skills to improve their career prospects. Master by coursework programs include compulsory and elective subjects in an established course structure. Some coursework degrees at the postgraduate level offer a research component and/or placements in a professional setting. Coursework programs include master’s degrees by coursework (one-two years in duration), postgraduate/graduate diplomas (two semesters), and graduate certificates (one semester).
Postgraduate research degrees are ideally suited for graduates who plan to enter academic life or to work as a researcher. Under expert academic supervision, postgraduate research students focus on an original, substantial research project. Entry usually requires an Honours year of study that included an Honours thesis or major research project. Some degrees may combine research with professional experience and/or coursework. Postgraduate research degrees include the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy, professional doctorates, and master’s by research.
