In 2008, Monash University celebrated 50 years of achievement. Granted its charter in 1958, Monash University welcomed its first intake of students in 1961 at the Clayton campus in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne’s climate is temperate and is one of a few places in Australia that enjoys four distinct seasons. In summer, with many days frequently over 30 degrees Celsius, the city’s beaches are popular, while the mountains near the city are frequently snow capped during winter. Winter temperatures are cool to brisk with the average range from seven to 14 degrees Celsius.

The people of Melbourne love to celebrate, and this is reflected in the events that the city is famous for, including: Australian Open tennis, Australian Rules Football, food and wine festivals, Formula One Grand Prix, International Comedy Festival, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and Spring Racing Carnival (including the renowned Melbourne Cup).
